Recently, the team used promotional content to highlight strategic seasonal events, focusing on moments that resonated with their users. For example, the team launched a special offer on Mother’s Day and introduced new Mother’s Day templates, effects, and stickers. They used matching graphics in their promotional content to tie it together, leading to a 770% increase in store listing visitors and a 560% increase in new installs.

We’ve built a series of productivity apps, with some surrounding screen recording for Android. Our team of young developers at AtlasV is always looking to challenge themselves for better algorithm, modularity, and adaptability in their source code.

In this sharing, we will discuss how we achieve the basic function of a media recorder by walking you through Android’s related source code, the thought process and steps.

Some of these techniques we apply in our source code are Android Inter-process Communication (Binder), Android Java Native Interface (JNI), strong pointer and weak pointer. For simplicity, we will now discuss these topics in detail in this article. If you want to know more about them, feel free to email us/ comment below. Step 1: Initialisation 

We will first load our desired so library using System.loadLibrary to get the libmedia_jni.so library ready. Afterwards, we use native_init() to enter the native layer. Basically, we use Java reflection through JNI to access some essential variables. These variables will then be passed to native layer and become native object for further reference. This is a common tactic for Android developers. 

Step 2: Object Creation 

We create an object called mediaRecorder = MediaRecorder(). We then enter JNI by analysing the native_setup method. In this step, some of the important moves are creating a new listener and passing it to MediaRecorder, and saving the objects created in native layer in the Java end. 

We then perform constructor analysis for MediaRecorder. 

The actual source code for the following methods can be very long. For better viewing experience, we will only walk you through some important methods we used in this step. 

1. setMediaRecorder: The addresses of objects are passed and saved in respective Java objects/variables for strong reference.  
2. getMediaRecorder: Addresses are converted to object pointers. 
3. setListener: A listener is set for MediaRecorder in Native layer for future reference

JNIMediaRecorderListener is an interesting object for callbacks. Read the code below to see how we achieve callbacks using different references and pointers.

// Using a weak reference

// Using a strong or weak pointer here

Step 3: Configuration Parameters

In our programme, all the configuration information is configured based on the following flow:

• Configuring interface for MediaRecorder.java

• Same configuring interface for android_media_MediaRecorder.cpp 

• Same configuring interface for mediarecorder.cpp

• Corresponding interface at the mediaServer end

Step 4: Preparation

After configuration, we can now call prepare method using the following code: 

// Surface not set yet when recording starts

// Application may misbehave and preview surface becomes unavailable

// Call for parameters and error handling

Next, we will enter Native layer and use the prepare method in MediaRecorder. The code is as follows: 

// Set audio encoder and source

// Video encoder

// Passing everything to MediaServer for programme execution

Step 5: Start 

Firstly, we will call start method using the following code: 

Secondly, we call start method in MediaRecorder from Native layer.

In summary, our source code works in three steps: 

1. Pass all parameters to the server end using Java methods and native methods. 
2. Maintain the state of MediaRecorder and check the parameters.
3. Messages and data from the server end will be passed to app end using native methods, followed by Java methods. 

That is the end of our source code sharing on our Media Recorder. We hope that our sharing on the app end process is educational for computing enthusiasts. Mr Jack Zhang, CEO of AtlasV, on the innovation that DigiX Lab will bring to Singapore’s mobile and tech ecosystem

Huawei has launched the DigiX Lab, a space for developers to connect, share expertise, and experience the full range of Huawei’s developer resources. The US$40 million establishment works as a centre to promote a diverse tech and mobile ecosystem, to accelerate the digital transformation within the region.

DigiX Lab offers test services for app developers to develop, debug, and test mobile apps on a wide selection of real Huawei devices, enabling them to easily and efficiently integrate Huawei Mobile Services’ open capabilities. You can find out more about Huawei’s DigiX Lab initiative here.

Currently, we have 5 apps listed in Huawei AppGallery, compatible under the Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). We plan to strengthen our collaboration and double our apps on HMS in 2021, bringing our apps to a wider stage with Huawei.

We are also excited to share our involvement as a local app developer, and the possibilities that this regional center will bring to the tech innovation at AtlasV. As our digital footprints grow exponentially, a tectonic shift in public awareness about privacy and security in the digital world has occurred. The calls for more privacy protection and regulation are on the rise around the world. 

We believe in the idea that personal data and information should be treated confidentially. Hence, we take user privacy as our utmost concern.

We interviewed our legal team manager, Calvin, on how AtlasV safeguards the privacy of users’ when we develop our products.

“Our products are in compliance with many data privacy protection regulations, such as GDPR, PDPA, CCPA and COPPA. These regulations act as a guideline, helping us in developing applications where the privacy of users’ sensitive information are protected,” Calvin said. 

What are these regulations all about?

• GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation 2018, Europian Union) 
• PDPA (Personal Data Protection Act 2012, Singapore)
• CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act 2018)
• COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule, 2018 USA) 

Generally, these regulations provide a baseline standard of protection for personal data and sensitive information. They govern the collection, use, disclosure and care of personal data by the service providers, and give consumers the right to control over their personal data; while COPPA specifically imposes requirements on providers whose services directed to children less than 13 years of age.

What is sensitive information?

Sensitive information is data that is required to be protected from unauthorized access and unwarranted disclosure. Misuse of the following sensitive information can result to user’s privacy disclosure:

• Personal Information (a.k.a. personally identifiable information) – data that can be linked to a specific individual, such as your identity information, contact information, medical information and banking information. 
• Business Information – data that would cause damage to a company if accessed by a competitor or the public, such as financial data, trade secrets, supplier information, and customer data.
• Digital Footprint – trail of data you create while using the Internet, such as your online activities, browsing history, cookies.
• Mobile Authorisations – Permission allowing service providers / apps to access to the content and features of your device, such your personal files (e.g. image, video, and audio files), camera, voice recorder etc.

So, how do AtlasV protect our users’ rights while developing the applications?

There are many elements involved in order to make this works; Calvin named us the three most important key elements when we are preparing to start our business:

Data Protection Officer (DPO)

DPO is a mandatory enterprise security leadership role for all companies that collect or process personal data, under the requirement of Article 37 in GDPR 

The primary role of the DPO is to oversee a company’s data protection strategy and its implementation, to ensure compliance with GPDR requirements. They are responsible for educating, training staff involved in data processing, and monitor compliance with data protection law. DPO also serve as the point of contact between the company and any Supervisory Authorities (SAs) on issues related to data processing.

Although there’s no hard rule on the qualification, favorable qualities of a DPO would be expert knowledge of data protection law and practices. Commonly, DPO is an IT professional (Security) or an expert with a legal background, or someone who received training from International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). DPO should also be familiar with the day to day operations of our company. 

Powerful Lawyer Team

Our powerful lawyer team helps our company navigate through a variety of data protection issues, including reviewing existing policies in order to ensure our compliance with the global law and regulations; drafting appropriate documents including personal data protection policies and website terms of use; and highlighting possible legal risk areas and potential breaches of the law and the PDPA.

Strong Inter-department Collaboration

The DPO should not be solely responsible for the compliance process of the entire company. Inter-department cooperation is essential because it is almost impossible for one person to have continuous insight into the fine segments of all the business processes.

Production team should ensure cybersecurity features are incorporated in to the product’s design to prevent the breach of sensitive information. Marketing team should make sure that the user’s sensitive information is not used as bargaining chip for the trade when they are cooperating with third parties. When operation teams organizes an event on festive seasons, the T&C and the information submitted by users during questionnaire or surveys must be deleted immediately after the activity ends. Customer Support team should also keep the conversation, chatting history and contact information of the users private and confidential. All teams will receive training on privacy related regulation every quarter of a year.

What matters to our users in this issue?

A data protection regime is necessary to safeguard personal data from misuse and to maintain individuals’ trust in service provider that manages their data.

“We hope our users feel at ease, after understanding our commitment in privacy protection and security through this interview session,” Calvin said.

COVID-19 has impacted the world in many ways, changing the way we live, work and play. The pandemic is impacting communities everywhere, some more than others. It is crucial, much more than ever, to support the global response, led by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The donations will be used to support WHO’s work, including with partners, to track and understand the spread of the coronavirus. It also empowers our community, ensuring that patients get the care they need and frontline workers get essential supplies and information in the fight. The donation will also be used to accelerate research and development of vaccines and treatments for all who need them. 

Everyone has a part to play, in their small ways for the global community.

We encourage our partners and users to support this cause within their means. Every drop of water makes up the ocean – no amount is too small to create a spark.

Daniel, AtlasV Product Manager, tells us his favourite part of the job and how good product design transcends culture.

“It all starts from a thousand thoughts,” Daniel quips. A Product Manager is responsible for product planning and execution. This includes defining the product vision, gathering insights from users, and working with stakeholders to launch a successful product. It’s a messy and meticulous job and requires utmost care and organisation to execute well. 

What’s your favourite part of the job?

User’s satisfaction. We enjoy reading positive reviews and going through suggestions and feedback on our channels – it gives us a fresh perspective of how actual users feel about our product.

So what do you really do?

We want to provide users with the portability and improve efficiency, so the products we design often pay great attention to user experience, making it easier for users to understand the use of a certain function. We design complex functions to be simple and easy to use. This thought process comes through in the icons we choose, the roadmap to complete an action, the number of taps to complete said action and so on. It’s an endless chase to arrive at a perfect user experience.

What’s the biggest challenge of this job?

User behaviour and experience differ across space and culture, so tailoring and customising the experience to different user culture and habit is important, especially when AtlasV has over 20 applications across iOS and Android in 150+ countries.

How do you learn about your users?

We understand our users through online surveys, building an enthusiastic user group in our loyal user base, social media listening, and conducting focus group discussions to learn more about their user habits and behaviour.

There are many elements involved in culture, just to name a few to broaden the discussion:

• Language, translation & grammar – Direct translations are sometimes impossible, and length of sentences in different languages can affect the responsiveness of app interface.
• Colour preference – by country, age and special needs. For example, we are currently working on a new update for ScannerLens, with colours and filters optimised for users with Colour Vision Deficiency.
• Different perceptions of the same thing – For example, what’s the first flavour of a green ice cream that comes to your mind? Is it Apple, Mint, Matcha or Avocado? Hold this thought for the usage of certain icons and designing of actions within the app.
• Reading direction – This is particularly pertinent in mobile apps. For Japanese users, scrolls are generally up to down, while for Arabic & Farsi user it is right to left.

Every detail is very important. We must be users of different cultures and provide corresponding products and services.

In the post-pandemic era, what kind of products will be welcomed by users?

We’re data-driven in AtlasV so we often look to what the numbers reflect. According to App Annie’s data, online meetings, online business-related, live video, food delivery services, gaming products, have all improved significantly, owing to work-from-home and stay-home arrangements. ScannerLens, our camera scanner app, also sees an upward trend, reporting a 300% MoM growth, with the strongest growth segment among students as classes went online.
